Which cup event did Royal Birkdale host in 1948?

The story behind the answer

Royal Birkdale hosted the Curtis Cup in 1948. The United States won that fifth Curtis Cup Match 6–2 against the British Isles on 21 and 22 May.

The Curtis Cup is a biennial team competition for leading women amateur golfers from the United States and Great Britain and Ireland. It is named after American sisters Harriot and Margaret Curtis, prominent golfers who donated the trophy. The event is often mentioned alongside the Walker Cup, but the Walker Cup is the men’s amateur equivalent, while the Ryder Cup is a professional men’s competition.

The 1948 contest at Birkdale used foursomes and singles. The American side won two of the three foursomes matches and then secured four singles victories, with another singles match halved. That decisive performance gave the United States its sixth Curtis Cup victory in the series.

Royal Birkdale’s next major international team event was the 1951 Walker Cup, also won by the United States.
