Which C.S. Lewis novel is the final book of the Narnia series?

The story behind the answer

The Last Battle is the final book of C.S. Lewis’s Narnia series.

Published in 1956, the novel depicts the destruction of the old Narnia and the movement of its central characters into a deeper reality. The plot begins with the ape Shift’s scheme involving a donkey named Puzzle and a false representation of Aslan. Their deception creates political and religious confusion and leads to conflict among the Narnians.

The book concludes the seven-volume series in publication order. It won the Carnegie Medal in 1957, an important British children’s literature prize. Lewis’s Narnia books were published between 1950 and 1956, with The Last Battle appearing six years after The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Readers sometimes place The Magician’s Nephew first when following the internal chronology of Narnia. That reading order does not change The Last Battle’s position as the final published volume and the series’ narrative conclusion.
