Which crocodile-headed god is associated with the Nile?

The story behind the answer

The crocodile-headed god associated with the Nile is Sobek.

Sobek was an ancient Egyptian deity represented as a crocodile or a human with a crocodile’s head. Because the Nile crocodile was both feared and respected, Sobek embodied dangerous strength as well as protection. He was associated with the Nile, fertility, military power, royal authority, and the pharaoh’s ability to defend Egypt.

Sobek’s worship was especially prominent in the Faiyum, a fertile region shaped by the Nile and its connected lake. His major cult center was Crocodilopolis, also called Shedet, where priests cared for sacred crocodiles. In later periods, crocodiles were mummified and offered at temples as manifestations of the god.

Sobek was not simply a hostile monster. Egyptians could invoke his ferocity to repel evil and protect the vulnerable. In some traditions he was connected with Isis and the healing of Osiris after Set’s attack. Sobek was also combined with the sun god as Sobek-Ra, showing how Egyptian deities could merge aspects without losing their individual identities.
