Stari Most is the Croatian bridge in Mostar, rebuilt in 2004 as a UNESCO-listed Ottoman-era landmark.
The original bridge was commissioned by Ottoman ruler Suleiman the Magnificent and completed in 1566 or 1567. Its single stone arch crosses the Neretva River and became the defining monument of Mostar, whose name means “Old Bridge.”
The original structure was destroyed during the Bosnian War in November 1993. International organizations and local authorities supported a reconstruction using traditional techniques and stone from the original site. The rebuilt bridge opened in 2004 and, with the surrounding Old Bridge Area of the Old City of Mostar, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2005. “Stari Most” is the local name; translations such as “Old Bridge” describe the name but are not the formal answer.
