Which country’s stock exchange suffered the 1929 crash that became known as Black Tuesday’s Wall Street collapse?

The story behind the answer

The 1929 crash that became known as Wall Street’s Black Tuesday collapse occurred in the United States.

The New York Stock Exchange was the principal market at the centre of the crisis. On 29 October 1929, heavy selling produced the day remembered as Black Tuesday. The crash followed a period of widespread speculation and buying shares with borrowed money.

The collapse did not by itself create every feature of the Great Depression, but it severely damaged confidence and wealth. Bank failures, falling production, unemployment, and international financial pressures deepened the economic downturn that followed.

The wording can cause confusion because the crash had worldwide consequences and other countries’ exchanges also fell. However, “Wall Street Crash” specifically identifies the United States market event centred on New York. Black Thursday and Black Tuesday are separate dates within the 1929 episode.
