China’s patent office grants the most patents annually among national patent offices.
The relevant office is the China National Intellectual Property Administration, or CNIPA. China’s enormous domestic filing volume has made it the world leader in annual patent applications and grants, far ahead of the United States, Japan, and South Korea in raw totals.
This ranking measures the number handled by an office, not necessarily the number of inventions originating in that country. A patent office may grant rights to both domestic and foreign applicants, and countries differ in patent categories, examination practices, filing incentives, and backlogs.
China’s totals also include invention, utility-model, and design patents in many commonly cited statistical comparisons. That makes the wording important: rankings can change if a quiz uses only invention patents, counts applications rather than grants, or compares patents by applicant origin instead of office location.
