China was the country whose Vogue edition launched in 2005 as the magazine’s first mainland Chinese edition.
Vogue China was published by Condé Nast in partnership with China Pictorial Publications. Its arrival reflected the rapid growth of China’s fashion, luxury, retail, and publishing industries during the early 2000s.
Angelica Cheung became the founding editor-in-chief and helped establish the magazine as an important platform for Chinese designers, models, photographers, and fashion writers. Vogue China also connected international luxury fashion houses with a growing Chinese readership.
The edition is sometimes confused with Vogue Taiwan, which appeared earlier, in 1996, or Vogue India, which launched in 2007. Vogue China’s launch was specifically significant because it created a major Vogue presence in mainland China rather than another regional Asian market.
