Which country won the 2010 FIFA World Cup?

The story behind the answer

Spain won the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Spain defeated the Netherlands 1–0 after extra time in the final at Soccer City in Johannesburg on July 11, 2010. Andrés Iniesta scored the winning goal in the 116th minute, giving Spain its first men’s World Cup title and completing one of the most celebrated periods in the country’s football history.

The tournament was hosted by South Africa from June 11 to July 11 and was the first FIFA World Cup held on the African continent. Spain’s possession-based style, often associated with the national team’s “tiki-taka” approach, helped it control matches despite narrow victories in the knockout rounds.

The Netherlands finished as runners-up, Germany placed third, and Uruguay finished fourth. The result is sometimes confused with Spain’s Euro 2008 and Euro 2012 victories, which formed part of the same golden generation but were separate tournaments. Spain entered the final after beating Germany 1–0 in the semifinal.
