Which country was the first to host two World Cups?

The story behind the answer

Mexico was the first country to host two FIFA World Cups, staging the tournaments in 1970 and 1986.

Mexico originally hosted the 1970 World Cup, which was won by Brazil after a 4–1 victory over Italy in the final at Mexico City's Estadio Azteca. Sixteen years later, Mexico stepped in again after Colombia withdrew from hosting the 1986 tournament because of financial and infrastructure concerns.

The 1986 competition was played from May 31 to June 29 across 11 Mexican cities. Argentina won the title, defeating West Germany 3–2 in the final, while Diego Maradona became the tournament's defining player. His two famous goals against England came in the quarter-final: the controversial “Hand of God” and the spectacular “Goal of the Century.”

A common mix-up is confusing the first country to host two World Cups with the first country to win two. Uruguay was the first champion in 1930, while Brazil became the first nation to win the tournament twice, in 1958 and 1962.
