The United States was among the first three Pokémon GO launch markets in 2016.

Pokémon GO launched on July 6, 2016, in Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. The augmented-reality mobile game used GPS and smartphone cameras to place Pokémon in real-world locations, allowing players to explore, capture creatures, visit PokéStops, and battle at Gyms.

Niantic developed and published the game in partnership with Nintendo and The Pokémon Company. Its staggered regional rollout reflected the technical demands of a large online launch and was followed by releases in additional countries.

Japan was not part of the first three launch markets; it received the game later, on July 22, 2016. Canada and the United Kingdom also launched after the initial group.
