Italy operates the Frecciarossa 1000 train, also known as the V300 Zefiro.
The train was developed by Bombardier Transportation and AnsaldoBreda, now part of Alstom and Hitachi respectively. Italian state railway operator Trenitalia uses it for Frecciarossa high-speed services, especially on routes linking major cities such as Turin, Milan, Bologna, Florence, Rome, and Naples.
The V300 Zefiro name refers to a wider train platform, while Frecciarossa 1000 is the commercial Italian designation. The train is designed for international interoperability and can work with several European electrical systems.
This train should not be confused with Italy’s older ETR 500 fleet or NTV’s Italo trains. “Frecciarossa” means “Red Arrow,” a branding name for Trenitalia’s premium high-speed services rather than a separate railway company.
