Which country launched the attack on Pearl Harbor?

The story behind the answer

Japan launched the attack on Pearl Harbor.

The Imperial Japanese Navy organized the raid as part of Japan’s wider war in the Asia-Pacific region. Japanese leaders hoped that a surprise strike would damage the United States Pacific Fleet enough to give Japan time to seize territories rich in oil, rubber, and other resources.

The attacking force sailed from northern Japan in secrecy and approached Hawaii across the North Pacific. It included six aircraft carriers and hundreds of aircraft. Japanese planes struck battleships, cruisers, destroyers, airfields, and other military targets on Oahu.

The attack did not destroy all American naval strength at Pearl Harbor. The base’s fuel storage facilities, repair yards, and submarine facilities were largely left intact. The raid therefore achieved major tactical damage but failed to eliminate the United States as a long-term Pacific power.
