Which country is the only nation with a land border with Portugal?

The story behind the answer

Spain is the only country with a land border with Portugal.

The Portugal–Spain border runs for roughly 1,214 kilometres along the Iberian Peninsula, making it one of the longest international borders within the European Union. It is often called La Raya in Spanish and A Raia in Portuguese, both meaning “the border.”

The border largely follows rivers, mountain areas, and historic regional boundaries. It has existed in broadly recognizable form since medieval treaties, although its exact course was shaped by later agreements and local disputes. Portugal’s eastern and northern sides meet Spain, while its western and southern sides face the Atlantic Ocean.

France is nearby across Spain, but it does not touch Portugal. Andorra borders Spain and France, and Morocco is separated from Portugal by the Atlantic and the Strait of Gibraltar. Portugal’s Atlantic islands have maritime boundaries rather than additional land borders.
