Which country is the home of the Mercedes-Benz brand?

The story behind the answer

Germany is the home country of the Mercedes-Benz brand.

Mercedes-Benz traces its origins to German automotive pioneers Carl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler. Benz patented the Patent-Motorwagen in 1886, while Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach developed important early petrol-powered vehicles and engines in Germany.

The Mercedes name became associated with Daimler automobiles in the early 1900s through Emil Jellinek, who promoted cars named after his daughter, Mercédès. Mercedes-Benz was formed in 1926 when Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft merged with Benz & Cie., creating Daimler-Benz.

The brand’s modern passenger-car operations are based in Stuttgart, in the German state of Baden-Württemberg. Mercedes-Benz now sells vehicles worldwide, so its cars may be assembled in multiple countries, but its brand origin remains German. It is also easy to confuse the brand’s international manufacturing footprint with its national identity: production locations do not change the answer to the question about the brand’s home.
