Toyota Motor Corporation is headquartered in Toyota City, in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Kiichiro Toyoda founded and incorporated the company on August 28, 1937, as a spinoff from Toyota Industries, the machinery company established by his father, Sakichi Toyoda.

The automaker’s early development began before its formal incorporation. Toyota Industries developed the Type A engine in 1934 and built the Toyota AA, the company’s first passenger car, in 1936. The name changed from Toyoda to Toyota partly because the new spelling was considered cleaner for branding and easier to write in Japanese characters.

Toyota is Japanese even though it manufactures vehicles worldwide, including in North America, Europe and Asia. That global production footprint can cause confusion about a car’s origin: a Toyota assembled in the United States remains a vehicle from a Japanese automaker. Toyota is also associated with Lexus, Daihatsu and the Prius, which helped popularize hybrid cars after its 1997 launch.
