Which country is the birthplace of guacamole?

The story behind the answer

Mexico is the birthplace of guacamole.

Guacamole is an avocado-based dip, spread, or salad that was first developed in Mexico. Its name comes from Classical Nahuatl āhuacamōlli, meaning “avocado sauce,” formed from words for avocado and sauce. The dish reflects the long history of avocado cultivation and use in Mesoamerica.

Archaeological evidence places early avocado use in Mexico as far back as 9000–10,000 years ago, with domestication occurring by about 5000 BCE. A 1697 travel book contains the first known description of a guacamole-like preparation, made by grinding avocados with sugar and lime juice.

A common mix-up is confusing the birthplace of guacamole with the countries where avocados are also native or widely grown. Avocados range naturally from Mexico through Central America to Peru, but guacamole itself is specifically associated with Mexican cuisine. Modern versions commonly include salt, lime juice, onion, cilantro, and chiles.
