Salsa golf is listed as originating in Argentina.

Salsa golf is a cold, thick sauce made mainly from mayonnaise mixed with a tomato-based sauce such as ketchup. It is especially associated with Argentina, where it is used with salads, meat, seafood and dishes such as palmitos en salsa golf.

According to the widely repeated origin story, the sauce was created in the mid-1920s at a golf club in Mar del Plata. The story credits physician and future Nobel Prize-winning chemist Luis Federico Leloir, who experimented with ingredients to accompany shrimp and prawns. His companions reportedly named the mixture salsa golf.

The sauce also became popular in neighboring Uruguay and is common in Chile and other South American countries. That regional spread can make the origin seem disputed, but Argentina is the canonical country answer. Outside South America, similar mixtures may be called Marie Rose sauce or fry sauce.
