Which country is listed as the croffle's place of origin?
Answer
Ireland
Answer
Ireland
Ireland is the country listed as the croffle’s place of origin.
A croffle combines croissant dough with the cooking pattern and crispness of a waffle. The pastry is made by placing laminated croissant dough in a waffle iron, where the butter-rich layers become compressed, browned and crisp. Sugar is often added to help create a caramelised exterior.
Irish pastry chef and television host Louise Lennox is often credited with creating or popularising the croffle in Ireland. She worked with Cuisine de France at a 2017 pop-up in Dublin, where the croffle was presented as a featured item. This is the basis for the country listing, even though the pastry’s exact invention is sometimes debated because an earlier 2015 American cooking video also demonstrated a similar preparation.
South Korea is the most common mix-up. Cafés in Seoul helped turn the croffle into a major trend from 2018 onward, and social media accelerated its popularity during 2020. South Korea popularised the pastry internationally, but the listed origin is Ireland.
