Which country is known for the street food 'pad thai'?

The story behind the answer

Thailand is the country known for the street food pad thai.

Pad thai is a stir-fried rice-noodle dish typically cooked in a wok with egg, tofu, bean sprouts, and a sweet-sour-savory sauce based on tamarind, fish sauce, and sugar. Shrimp, dried shrimp, chicken, or other proteins may be added, while crushed peanuts, lime, chili, and fresh vegetables are often served alongside.

The dish’s modern identity emerged in Thailand during the mid-20th century. It is commonly linked to nation-building campaigns under Prime Minister Plaek Phibunsongkhram, when noodles were promoted during wartime rice shortages. Chinese immigrants and earlier Chinese noodle traditions also influenced its technique and ingredients.

Pad thai is sometimes mistaken for a dish with centuries of unchanged history, but its recognizable modern form is relatively recent. Its name also distinguishes it from other Thai noodle dishes such as pad see ew, which is usually flavored with dark soy sauce rather than tamarind.
