Which country is Kaiserschmarrn, a shredded sweet pancake, most associated with?

The story behind the answer

Kaiserschmarrn is a shredded sweet pancake most associated with Austria.

The name combines Kaiser, meaning “emperor,” with Schmarren, an Austrian and Bavarian term for a shredded or scrambled dish. It is traditionally linked with Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria, although several stories about its creation are legendary rather than firmly documented.

The batter commonly contains flour, eggs, milk, sugar and butter. Cooks tear the pancake into pieces while it finishes cooking, often adding raisins and dusting the result with powdered sugar. It is usually served with plum compote, apple sauce or another fruit accompaniment.

Kaiserschmarrn is also popular in Bavaria and parts of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire, including Hungary, Slovakia and northern Italy. That wider regional popularity can make its national association seem less exclusive, but Austria is the standard quiz answer.
