Which country is home to the Great Pyramids of Giza?
Answer
Egypt
Answer
Egypt
The country home to the Great Pyramids of Giza is Egypt. The famous pyramid complex stands at Giza, on the western edge of modern Cairo, near the Nile Valley.
The complex includes the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the Pyramid of Khafre, the Pyramid of Menkaure, the Great Sphinx, temples, causeways, and smaller pyramids. Built during Egypt’s Fourth Dynasty in the Old Kingdom, the pyramids served as royal funerary monuments. The Great Pyramid was constructed for Pharaoh Khufu, also known by his Greek name, Cheops.
The Great Pyramid was originally about 146.6 metres tall and remained the tallest human-made structure for more than 3,700 years. Its builders used millions of limestone blocks, along with granite transported from Aswan far to the south. Much of its smooth white limestone outer casing was later removed, leaving the stepped core visible today.
A common mix-up is confusing Giza with other pyramid sites, such as Saqqara or Dahshur. Those sites are also in Egypt, but Giza is the location of the best-known trio and the Great Sphinx.
