Which country is home to the ancient city of Timbuktu on the southern edge of the Sahara?

The story behind the answer

Mali is home to the ancient city of Timbuktu on the southern edge of the Sahara.

Timbuktu developed near the southern limit of the Sahara in present-day Mali, close to the Niger River’s inland delta. Its location connected trans-Saharan caravan routes with waterways and trading centers farther south. Gold, salt, books, and other goods moved through the region, helping the city become a major commercial and intellectual center.

The city flourished especially under the Mali and Songhai empires. The Sankore mosque and university tradition attracted scholars, while libraries and private collections preserved thousands of manuscripts on subjects including law, theology, astronomy, mathematics, and medicine. Timbuktu’s fame in medieval and early modern Europe partly arose because it was difficult for outsiders to reach.

Timbuktu’s historic mosques and mausoleums were built largely from earthen materials and require continual maintenance. The Old Towns of Timbuktu became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. Armed groups damaged several mausoleums in 2012, but restoration work later rebuilt many of the destroyed structures.
