Which country is home to the ancient city of Timbuktu, a major center of Islamic scholarship?

The story behind the answer

Mali is home to the ancient city of Timbuktu, a major center of Islamic scholarship.

Timbuktu developed near the southern edge of the Sahara, close to the Niger River’s inland delta. Its location connected trans-Saharan trade routes with West African river and savanna networks. Gold, salt, books, and other goods moved through the region, helping the city become wealthy and influential.

From the fourteenth through sixteenth centuries, Timbuktu flourished under the Mali and Songhai empires. The Sankore educational complex and other institutions attracted scholars, while mosques such as Djinguereber, Sankore, and Sidi Yahya became prominent landmarks.

The city is especially associated with thousands of Arabic and West African manuscripts covering subjects including law, theology, mathematics, astronomy, medicine, and history. Timbuktu’s historic monuments were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. Its mud-brick architecture requires continual maintenance because wind, heat, and rain erode the structures.
