Portugal is home to Nazaré, the surfing location famous for giant waves.
Nazaré lies on Portugal’s Atlantic coast, north of Lisbon. The Praia do Norte area became internationally famous for exceptionally large waves, which are amplified by the underwater Nazaré Canyon. The canyon channels and focuses incoming swell toward the coast, helping produce waves far larger than those at many nearby beaches.
The location has hosted major big-wave surfing achievements and tow-in sessions. Its distinctive lighthouse and cliff-top viewpoint at Fort of São Miguel Arcanjo are closely associated with images of surfers riding enormous walls of water.
Nazaré is sometimes mistakenly identified as being in Spain because both countries occupy the Iberian Peninsula. It is firmly in Portugal, whose long Atlantic coastline also includes many other important surfing areas. Wave size at Nazaré depends on swell direction, wind, tide, and the canyon’s complex underwater shape.
