Which country is Great Barrier Island part of?

Great Barrier Island is part of New Zealand. Known in Māori as Aotea, it lies in the outer Hauraki Gulf about 100 kilometres northeast of central Auckland and is administered as part of the Auckland region.

The island covers roughly 285 square kilometres, making it New Zealand’s sixth-largest island. Its highest point is Mount Hobson, or Hirakimatā, which rises to about 627 metres. The island’s position helps shield the Hauraki Gulf from Pacific swells, explaining the English name “Great Barrier.”

Great Barrier Island has a long history of mining, kauri logging, farming, fishing, and tourism. Today, much of it is protected land, with around 60 percent managed as a nature reserve by New Zealand’s Department of Conservation.

It is also known for its remote, largely off-grid way of life. Many homes generate electricity with solar panels and batteries, and the island became an International Dark Sky Sanctuary in 2017, making it a popular destination for stargazing.
