Which country is Casablanca in?

Casablanca is in Morocco. The city sits on Morocco’s Atlantic coast and is the country’s largest urban center and main economic hub.

Casablanca began as an ancient settlement known to the Romans as Anfa. After an earthquake destroyed much of the town in 1755, Sultan Mohammed III rebuilt it; the modern name derives from the Spanish phrase for “white house.” Morocco’s Arabic name for the city is ad-Dār al-Bayḍāʾ.

The city is often mistaken for Morocco’s capital because of its size and international prominence. Rabat is the political and administrative capital, while Casablanca is the country’s commercial and financial center. Its port, one of Africa’s important Atlantic gateways, helped drive the city’s rapid growth during the 20th century.

The 1942 film Casablanca was set in the city, but most of it was filmed in Hollywood studios. The film made the name famous worldwide, while the real city is known for landmarks such as the Hassan II Mosque and its Art Deco architecture.
