Which country hosted the 2016 Summer Olympics?

The story behind the answer

Brazil hosted the 2016 Summer Olympics, held in Rio de Janeiro from 5 to 21 August 2016.

The Games, officially called the Games of the XXXI Olympiad, were the first Summer Olympics held in South America. Rio was selected as host at an International Olympic Committee session in Copenhagen in 2009, defeating Madrid, Tokyo, and Chicago in the final selection process.

The competition featured 306 events across 28 sports, with more than 11,000 athletes representing over 200 national teams. The opening ceremony took place at Maracanã Stadium, while many events were staged at venues across Rio, including Copacabana, Barra da Tijuca, and Deodoro.

A common mix-up is confusing the host country with the host city: Rio de Janeiro was the city, while Brazil was the country. These Olympics also marked the debut of golf and rugby sevens on the modern Summer Games program.
