Which country has Timbuktu within its borders?

The story behind the answer

Which country has Timbuktu within its borders? Timbuktu is in Mali.

Timbuktu is an historic city in northern Mali, near the southern edge of the Sahara and roughly 20 kilometers north of the Niger River’s main channel. It is the capital of Mali’s Tombouctou Region, although its famous name often makes people imagine a distant, almost mythical location rather than a real city.

The settlement grew into a major trans-Saharan trading center between the 12th and 14th centuries. Its position linked North Africa with West Africa, and merchants exchanged salt, gold, ivory and other goods there. Under the Mali Empire, especially during the era associated with Mansa Musa, Timbuktu also became a renowned center of Islamic scholarship.

The city’s Sankoré educational complex and manuscript traditions helped establish its reputation as a place of learning. Timbuktu later came under Songhai, Moroccan and French control before becoming part of independent Mali in 1960.

A common error is placing Timbuktu in Niger because it lies close to that country and to historic Saharan routes. It is firmly within Mali, in the country’s far north.
