Which country has the city of Timbuktu, a historic center of trans-Saharan trade and Islamic scholarship?

The story behind the answer

Mali has the city of Timbuktu, a historic center of trans-Saharan trade and Islamic scholarship.

Timbuktu stands near the southern edge of the Sahara, close to the Niger River’s inland delta. Its position made it a useful meeting point for camel caravans carrying salt northward and gold, grain, and other goods southward.

The city became especially influential under the Mali Empire and later the Songhai Empire. Its scholars taught Islamic law, theology, grammar, mathematics, and astronomy, while libraries preserved thousands of manuscripts.

Timbuktu is sometimes portrayed as an unreachable mythical place, but it was a major urban center connected to wide commercial and intellectual networks. Its historic mosques and monuments include Djinguereber, Sankore, and Sidi Yahya.
