Which country has territory in all four hemispheres?

The story behind the answer

Kiribati has territory in all four hemispheres.

The Pacific island country of Kiribati extends across the Equator and the 180th meridian, giving it islands in the Northern, Southern, Eastern and Western Hemispheres. Its territory is spread across three island groups: the Gilbert Islands, the Phoenix Islands and the Line Islands.

Kiribati’s wide east-west span crosses the conventional International Date Line, although the country shifted its time-zone boundaries in 1995 so its eastern islands would share the same calendar date as the rest of the nation. The Line Islands use UTC+14, among the world’s earliest civil time zones.

Indonesia crosses the Equator and occupies both hemispheres, but it does not extend into both the Eastern and Western Hemispheres under the usual geographic meridian definition. Kiribati’s unusual distribution makes it a classic example of a country spanning all four.
