Which country has Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain?

The story behind the answer

Which country has Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain? Tanzania. The mountain stands in northern Tanzania, close to the Kenyan border, and its highest point, Uhuru Peak, rises to about 5,895 metres (19,341 feet). Although Kenya is often associated with views of the mountain, Kilimanjaro itself is entirely within Tanzania.

Kilimanjaro is a dormant stratovolcano made up of three volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira. Kibo is the highest and contains Uhuru Peak on its crater rim; Mawenzi and Shira are extinct. The mountain formed through volcanic activity linked to the East African Rift.

The name is of uncertain origin, but proposed meanings include “mountain of greatness” and “unclimbable mountain.” European attention grew after missionary Johannes Rebmann reported seeing it in 1848. Hans Meyer and Ludwig Purtscheller made the first documented ascent in 1889.

Kilimanjaro became part of Kilimanjaro National Park in 1973 and is one of the Seven Summits. It is a popular trekking destination, but altitude sickness remains a serious risk even though the climb is not highly technical.
