Which country has more pyramids than Egypt?
Answer
Sudan
Answer
Sudan
Sudan has more pyramids than Egypt, with roughly 255 known Nubian pyramids built by the ancient kingdoms of Kush.
These pyramids stand mainly at royal cemeteries including Meroë, Nuri, El-Kurru, and Jebel Barkal. They were constructed from about 800 BCE to 100 CE, although the burial tradition continued across a broader period. Kushite rulers adopted pyramid-building partly from Egyptian traditions, but developed a distinctive style of their own.
Nubian pyramids are generally narrower and steeper than the famous pyramids of Giza. Most are less than 30 metres tall and have offering chapels at their bases. Unlike many Egyptian pyramids, their burial chambers were typically cut into the ground beneath the pyramid.
A common mix-up is assuming Egypt must have the largest number because its monuments are more famous. Egypt has the best-known individual pyramids, including the Great Pyramid of Giza, but Sudan has more pyramidal structures overall. The Meroë pyramid fields are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
