Which country has Canberra as its national capital?
Answer
Australia
Answer
Australia
Australia has Canberra as its national capital.
Canberra became the capital because Australia’s constitution required a federal capital in New South Wales, but at least 100 miles from Sydney. The city was selected in 1908, and American architect Walter Burley Griffin’s plan won an international design competition in 1912.
The federal Parliament moved from Melbourne to Canberra in 1927. Canberra is a planned city built around Lake Burley Griffin, an artificial lake completed in the 1960s. It is located within the Australian Capital Territory, which is surrounded by New South Wales. Sydney and Melbourne are larger and more internationally famous, but neither is Australia’s constitutional capital.
