Which country did Michael Phelps represent throughout his Olympic swimming career?
Answer
United States
Answer
United States
Michael Phelps represented the United States throughout his Olympic swimming career.
Phelps made his Olympic debut for the U.S. team at the 2000 Sydney Games, when he was only 15 years old. He returned for Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, London 2012, and Rio de Janeiro 2016, always competing under the American flag and as a member of the United States Olympic swimming team.
His five Olympic appearances produced 28 medals: 23 gold, 3 silver, and 2 bronze. His eight gold medals in Beijing made him the most successful athlete at a single Olympic Games at that time, and his 23 Olympic golds remain the career record.
The country is sometimes confused with Phelps’s hometown or training locations. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and trained with North Baltimore Aquatic Club, but his Olympic representation was international competition for the United States. He also served as the U.S. flag bearer at the opening ceremony in Rio in 2016.
