Lennox Lewis represented Canada when he won Olympic super heavyweight gold in 1988.
Lewis was born in London, England, but moved with his family to Canada as a child and developed as an amateur boxer there. At the 1988 Seoul Olympics, he competed for Canada in the super heavyweight division, the class above heavyweight, and won the gold medal.
His Olympic triumph included a victory over American Riddick Bowe in the final. Lewis had previously represented Canada at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, where he lost in the quarterfinals. The 1988 gold established him as one of the leading amateur heavyweights in the world.
A common mix-up comes from Lewis's birthplace and later professional career in Britain. He eventually became a British professional champion and represented the United Kingdom as a professional, but his Olympic medal was won for Canada. Lewis turned professional shortly after the Seoul Games and later became undisputed heavyweight champion.
