J.K. Rowling lived in Portugal while teaching English before returning to Britain. She moved to Porto in 1991 and taught English as a foreign language.
During her time in Portugal, Rowling met and married Portuguese television journalist Jorge Arantes in 1992. Their daughter, Jessica, was born in July 1993. Rowling later left Portugal and moved to Edinburgh, Scotland, with her daughter in 1993.
This period is important in biographies of Rowling because it came between her university years and the publication of the first Harry Potter novel. She had begun developing ideas about Harry earlier, but the series was not yet published during her teaching work in Portugal.
Portugal is sometimes confused with France because Rowling studied French at university and spent part of her degree in Paris. Those are separate stages of her life: France was connected with her university course, while Portugal was where she taught English and started a family.
