Sweden, the host nation, scored first through captain Nils Liedholm. Brazil quickly recovered, with Vavá scoring twice before halftime. Pelé then scored in the second half, including a famous goal in which he lifted the ball over a defender before volleying it into the net. Mário Zagallo added another goal, while Agne Simonsson scored Sweden’s second.
The victory gave Brazil its first World Cup title. It also made Sweden the first host nation to lose a World Cup final. The match remains notable for its seven goals, its three-goal winning margin, and Pelé becoming the youngest player to appear in, score in, and win a World Cup final.
A common mix-up is confusing Sweden with France, whom Brazil defeated 5–2 in the semifinal. Brazil’s quarterfinal opponent was Wales.
