Poland contains Malbork Castle, the world's largest castle complex measured by land area.
Malbork Castle was built in present-day northern Poland by the Teutonic Order, a German Catholic military order. Construction began in the 13th century, and the site became the order's headquarters in 1309. It was named Marienburg, meaning Mary's Castle, after the Virgin Mary.
The complex is a major example of medieval brick Gothic architecture. It includes the High Castle, Middle Castle, and Lower Castle, along with defensive walls, courtyards, chapels, halls, and service buildings. The use of brick was especially important in a region where suitable building stone was scarce.
Polish forces captured Malbork after the Thirteen Years' War in the 15th century. The castle later served as a royal residence and military site. It suffered severe damage during World War II but was extensively restored. UNESCO added Malbork Castle to its World Heritage List in 1997.
