Botswana contains the world’s largest inland delta, the Okavango Delta.
The Okavango Delta spreads across northern Botswana, where the Okavango River reaches the Kalahari Basin and disappears into a broad network of channels, lagoons, and floodplains. Unlike a conventional river delta, it does not flow into an ocean or lake. Its annual flood usually arrives during Botswana’s dry season, creating a striking contrast between water-rich wetlands and surrounding semi-arid land.
The delta covers roughly 15,000 square kilometres during peak flooding, although its size changes seasonally. It supports elephants, hippopotamuses, lions, African wild dogs, crocodiles, and many bird species. The region is one of Africa’s best-known wildlife destinations.
The Okavango Delta became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014. Namibia’s Caprivi Strip and Angola’s highlands influence the river system, but the delta itself lies in Botswana. The inland setting is the key distinction: the water is absorbed by the Kalahari sands rather than reaching a coastline.
