Which country contains the historic city of Petra?

The story behind the answer

Jordan contains the historic city of Petra.

Petra is an archaeological city in southern Jordan, famous for buildings carved into rose-coloured sandstone cliffs. It was the capital of the Nabataean Kingdom, an Arab trading power that controlled routes linking Arabia, the Levant, and the Mediterranean. The city’s prosperity depended partly on trade in spices, incense, and other valuable goods.

The Romans annexed the Nabataean Kingdom in AD 106. Petra later declined as trade routes changed and earthquakes damaged its water systems and buildings. In the nineteenth century, it became widely known in Europe after Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt visited it in 1812.

The Treasury, or Al-Khazneh, is Petra’s most famous façade, but it was probably a monumental tomb rather than a treasury. Petra was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985 and is often called the “Rose City” because of the colour of its stone.
