Which country contains the ancient city of Timbuktu, a historic center of Islamic scholarship?

The story behind the answer

Mali contains the ancient city of Timbuktu, a historic center of Islamic scholarship.

Timbuktu lies near the southern edge of the Sahara, north of the Niger River’s inland delta. Its position connected trans-Saharan caravan routes with river transport and helped it grow into an important commercial and intellectual center. Gold, salt, and other goods moved through the wider region, linking West Africa with North Africa and the Mediterranean world.

The city flourished particularly under the Mali and Songhai empires. From the fourteenth to the sixteenth centuries, scholars gathered in Timbuktu’s mosques and private schools, studying law, theology, grammar, astronomy, mathematics, and history. The Sankore Mosque and its associated scholarly community became especially famous.

Timbuktu’s historic mosques and mausoleums are built largely from mud brick and earthen plaster, requiring regular maintenance. The city’s manuscript collections preserve thousands of texts, many written in Arabic or local languages using Arabic script. UNESCO listed Timbuktu as a World Heritage Site in 1988. Armed groups damaged several mausoleums in 2012, but local and international efforts later supported their reconstruction and conservation.
