Which country contains the ancient city of Tikal?

The story behind the answer

Guatemala contains the ancient Maya city of Tikal.

Tikal was one of the most important cities of the ancient Maya civilization and is located in Guatemala’s Petén Department. The city grew into a major political, economic, and ceremonial centre during the Classic period, especially between the third and tenth centuries CE.

Its monumental architecture includes steep temple pyramids, palaces, plazas, and causeways built in a dense tropical forest. Temple IV rises about 70 metres above the surrounding landscape and is among the tallest pre-Columbian structures in the Americas. Tikal’s rulers recorded dynastic history on carved monuments and architecture.

The site was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979 for both its cultural and natural importance. Tikal is within Tikal National Park, part of the Maya Forest, and its setting helps explain why the ruins remained hidden by vegetation for centuries after the city’s political decline.
