Which country contains the ancient city of Chichén Itzá?

The story behind the answer

The ancient city of Chichén Itzá is in Mexico.

Chichén Itzá is a major Maya archaeological site in the northern Yucatán Peninsula. Its name is often interpreted as referring to the wells of the Itzá, a Maya group associated with the city. The site flourished as a regional political, economic, and religious centre, especially between about 900 and 1200 CE.

The best-known monument is El Castillo, also called the Temple of Kukulcán. It is a stepped pyramid with 365 principal steps, a number associated with the solar year. During the equinoxes, changing sunlight can create a serpent-like pattern along the pyramid’s northern staircase, although the exact ancient intention and modern viewing effects are debated.

Chichén Itzá also contains the Great Ball Court, the largest known ancient ball court in Mesoamerica, and the Sacred Cenote. UNESCO listed the site as a World Heritage Site in 1988. In 2007, it was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
