Which country contains the ancient city of Angkor?

The story behind the answer

Cambodia contains the ancient city of Angkor.

Angkor was the capital region of the Khmer Empire in northern Cambodia. It flourished from roughly the ninth to the fifteenth centuries and included temples, reservoirs, roads, and urban settlements spread across a large area near modern Siem Reap.

The best-known monument is Angkor Wat, a vast temple complex built in the early twelfth century under King Suryavarman II. It was originally dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu and later became an important Buddhist site. Angkor Thom, another major complex, was developed under Jayavarman VII.

Angkor is sometimes treated as a single temple, but the name refers to a much broader archaeological landscape. UNESCO listed the Angkor site as a World Heritage Site in 1992, and conservation work continues to protect its stone structures and water systems.
