Which country contains the ancient city of Angkor, including Angkor Wat?

The story behind the answer

Cambodia contains the ancient city of Angkor, including the temple complex of Angkor Wat.

Angkor was the capital region of the Khmer Empire, which dominated much of mainland Southeast Asia from roughly the ninth to the fifteenth centuries. Its monumental temples, reservoirs, roads, and urban infrastructure form one of the world’s most important archaeological landscapes.

Angkor Wat was built in the early twelfth century during the reign of King Suryavarman II. It was originally dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu and later became a Buddhist religious site. Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument in the world by land area, but it is only one part of the much larger Angkor complex. The site is near Siem Reap in northwestern Cambodia and appears on the Cambodian national flag.
