Which country completely surrounds San Marino?

The story behind the answer

Italy completely surrounds San Marino, making the microstate a sovereign enclave within the Italian Peninsula.

San Marino lies in Southern Europe on the northeastern slopes of the Apennine Mountains. It has no coastline and shares about 39 kilometres of land border with Italy, mostly with Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region and a short stretch with Marche. The country’s capital, the City of San Marino, sits on the slopes of Monte Titano.

San Marino claims a foundation date of AD 301, when the Christian stonemason Marinus is traditionally said to have established a community there. It also claims to be the world’s oldest surviving sovereign state and oldest constitutional republic, though such historical distinctions depend on how continuity and constitutional history are defined.

The most common geographic mix-up is with Vatican City, which is also surrounded by Italy but is a separate country inside Rome. San Marino is much larger than Vatican City and is one of only a few countries completely enclosed by another single country.
