Which country borders Qatar to the south?

Qatar borders Saudi Arabia to the south. It is Qatar’s only land boundary, while the country’s other sides face the waters of the Persian Gulf.

Qatar occupies a peninsula extending northward from the Arabian Peninsula. Its southern frontier connects it to Saudi Arabia, with the border stretching for roughly 87 kilometers between the Gulf of Bahrain and the Persian Gulf. The main land crossing is at Abu Samra in Qatar and Salwa in Saudi Arabia.

A common mix-up is choosing the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, or Oman because all are nearby Gulf states. However, Qatar does not share a land border with any of them. Bahrain and the UAE are separated from Qatar by maritime boundaries, while Oman lies farther southeast and does not touch Qatar.

The border has also had political and historical importance. Saudi Arabia and Qatar formally clarified parts of their boundary through agreements, including a 1965 settlement and later border-demarcation arrangements. Today, the Saudi frontier remains Qatar’s sole overland connection to another country.
