Which Corvette generation first used a rear mid-engine layout?

The story behind the answer

The C8 was the first Corvette generation to use a rear mid-engine layout.

Introduced for the 2020 model year, the eighth-generation Corvette moved its V8 engine behind the passenger compartment but ahead of the rear axle. This rear mid-engine arrangement places more mass near the center of the car, helping improve traction, balance, steering response, and high-speed handling compared with the Corvette's traditional front-mounted layout.

The change was a major break with Corvette history. Generations C1 through C7 used front-engine layouts, although the engine was positioned behind the front axle in later cars and is often described as front-mid-engine. Chevrolet and GM explored mid-engine Corvette prototypes for decades, but none reached regular production before the C8.

The C8 coupe debuted in July 2019 as a 2020 model, and production began in Bowling Green, Kentucky, in February 2020. Its architecture also enabled a retractable-hardtop convertible and helped move the Corvette closer to supercar performance while preserving its two-seat format.
