Burger King’s 1998 April Fools’ prank introduced the “Left-Handed Whopper.”
The fast-food corporation advertised the joke in a full-page newspaper advertisement, including in USA Today. Burger King claimed that the sandwich had been redesigned for left-handed customers, with its condiments rotated 180 degrees so they would supposedly be easier for southpaws to handle.
The prank played on the familiar design of the Whopper rather than introducing a genuinely different menu item. Some customers reportedly took the announcement seriously and asked restaurants for the left-handed version, illustrating how a straightforward advertisement could blur the line between product news and parody.
The Left-Handed Whopper is often mixed up with later Burger King stunts, such as the 2013 hands-free Whopper holder. Those were separate promotions. The 1998 joke specifically concerned a supposedly left-handed version of the Whopper.
