Which continent is home to Mount Kilimanjaro, the world’s highest free-standing mountain?

The story behind the answer

Africa is home to Mount Kilimanjaro, the world’s highest free-standing mountain.

Kilimanjaro stands in northeastern Tanzania near the Kenyan border. It is a massive volcanic complex with three cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. Kibo is the highest and contains Uhuru Peak, whose elevation is about 5,895 meters above sea level.

The mountain is called free-standing because it rises as an isolated massif rather than forming part of a major mountain range. Although it is near the equator, its summit has historically supported ice and snow. Glaciers have declined substantially over the past century, making Kilimanjaro a prominent example in discussions about changing mountain environments.

The first recorded ascent to the summit was made in 1889 by Hans Meyer, Ludwig Purtscheller, and their guide Yohanas Kinyala Lauwo. Kilimanjaro is protected within Kilimanjaro National Park, established in 1973, and is one of Tanzania’s most important tourism sites.
